Officer shoots, critically wounds teen student suspected in Houston-area school break-in May 1st 2012, 18:07 PASADENA, Texas –  A 14-year-old boy suspected in the overnight break-in of a Houston-area classroom was in critical condition Tuesday after being shot by a police officer who confronted him outside the building, authorities said. The boy, an eighth-grader at the school, was shot in the chest by the district police officer, who was investigating a broken window in a portable classroom containing computers after an alarm went off, Pasadena Independent School District Superintendent Kirk Lewis. The officer said he felt threatened by the boy, whose name wasn't released, Lewis said. According to a release from the district, the officer called for backup but before help arrived spotted the boy leaving the building. The boy, who was carrying a backpack containing contents from the building, saw the officer and tried to flee, and the officer told him to stop before opening fire, authorities said. The officer, who has been with the district six years and is a 17-year law enforcement veteran, was not hurt in the incident. He was placed on leave pending "further developments," according to the release. The shooting occurred around 12:45 a.m. CDT at Miller Intermediate School in Pasadena, Lewis said. School district police were investigating the burglary and Pasadena police were investigating the shooting. The district said in its release that the incident was the first time in the history of the school district's police department, which was established in 1981, that a firearm was discharged by an officer as part of a law enforcement action. A call Tuesday by The Associated Press to Pasadena city police was not immediately returned. The portable classroom where the incident occurred was often used for after-school activities but wasn't currently being used a classroom. Classes were going on as scheduled Tuesday. "We want to make the day as normal as we can for our students," Lewis said.
