May 1st 2012, 13:16

PASADENA, Texas –  Authorities say a 14-year-old student at a Houston-area school is in critical condition after a police officer investigating a classroom break-in shot him.

Pasadena Independent School District Superintendent Kirk Lewis says the shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Intermediate School.

Lewis says the officer was investigating a broken window in a portable classroom containing computers after an alarm went off. He confronted the boy, who was carrying a backpack, but the boy refused to stop. Lewis says the officer felt threatened and opened fire.

He says the officer was not hurt in the incident but that the 8th grade student is hospitalized in critical condition.

The teen's name and further details about him were not immediately released.

Classes were scheduled as usual Tuesday.
